EXCERPT

I left the bathroom in a hurry, turning the corner for the foyer and slamming into him. The

force of the hit was so great that I stumbled backwards, nearly falling on my bottom if not for his

outstretched hand. I grabbed it before going down and wobbled on my too-high heels, clutching

him as I worked to regain my balance.

“God, I’m sorry!” he exclaimed.

I looked at his face then, unprepared to see something so beautiful. I think I gasped. And

then I averted my eyes out of sheer embarrassment.

“I really should watch where I’m going,” he said.

He still held my hand, and I let him. I couldn’t remember who I was or where I was going. I

couldn’t remember where I had just been. I only knew that a very cute boy . . . no, he was more

than cute. He was gorgeous. This very gorgeous boy was holding my hand, and I had only one

thought. I wanted to make our handholding more intimate. I wanted to lace my fingers with his.

“I think I should,” I mumbled.

I chanced another look at him. I made a conscientious effort not to gasp as I took in his light

blue eyes. I’d never seen eyes that color. Jared Leto had nothing on this guy’s eyes, and Jared’s

eyes were the color of the Mediterranean. No, the eyes I looked into now were so light blue they

looked translucent. I thought if I stared a little longer I could see right inside his head, to his

brain, and I don’t know why that turned me on so much. I wanted to witness the workings of his

mind, the firing synapses, information traveling safely inside neurons to different parts of his

body. A few made it to his hand, and they must have told him to keep holding mine because he

didn’t let go.

I stared shamelessly, licking my lips at one point. He stared back just as boldly. I wanted

him to like what he saw. I wanted him to think I was sexy. I wanted him to feel the same instant

attraction I did. I’d never felt it before. Not really. Not even with Finn. It was unsettling, and I

wondered how people functioned after being smacked upside the head with it. Instant. Physical.

Chemical.

Primal.

Just rip my clothes off, I thought. Just rip my clothes off and do me right here in the hallway!

He smiled and released my hand. I thought he did it reluctantly, like his brain ordered him

to and he finally acquiesced. I smiled back, a flirty grin. I pulled my ponytail forward over my

shoulder and played with the strands. I bit my lower lip. And then reality came crashing down

like a hailstorm, large lumps of ice banging my head and screaming at me in unison.

“YOU’RE AT A FUNERAL!”

I looked at the gorgeous guy, and my face went white.

“Oh my God,” I whispered.

He stared at me for a moment before saying, “Are you okay?”

I shook my head and started towards the sanctuary doors. He followed behind.

“I’m awful, I’m awful, I’m awful,” I whispered over and over. I didn’t care if he could hear.

What the hell was I doing? Trying to flirt with a guy at my best friend’s funeral? How could

I even forget for a second that I was at a funeral? I was supposed to be carrying around heavy,

black sorrow to match my black dress and black heart, not batting lashes and fantasizing about

sex with a stranger. Was I so ridiculous that a hot guy could make me forget to have any kind of

decency? Or shame?

I rounded the corner and saw my mother waiting for me. And then I ran to her, threw myself

into her arms, and burst into a fit of tears.

“Brooklyn,” she whispered, holding me in a tight hug. “It’s okay,” she cooed as she stroked

my hair.

“I’m a terrible friend!” I wailed. I saw the fuzzy outline of a boy walking past us tentatively

through the doors.

“No, you aren’t,” my mother replied.

“Yes, I am! I don’t even know why I’m here! Beth hated my guts! She wouldn’t talk to me

all summer!”

“Brooke,” Mom said. “I want you to calm down. Now, we talked about this. You knew it

would be hard, but she was your best friend for all those years. Do you think she wouldn’t have

wanted you here?”

“No, I don’t!” I cried.

“Yes, she would,” Mom said. “Now we have to go in.”

“I can’t!”

“Brooke, Beth was your best friend,” Mom said, trying for patience.

“No she wasn’t! Not after what I did! I ruined everything! I’m a freaking slut!” I sobbed,

shaking my head from side to side.

“Sweetheart, don’t say words like ‘freaking’ and ‘slut’ in a church,” Mom replied.

I only sobbed louder.

“You can do this,” Mom encouraged.

I stood my ground, shaking my head violently, refusing to go in.

“Brooklyn Wright!” Mom hissed, pushing me away and grabbing my upper arm. She

squeezed too tightly, and I squeaked in discomfort. There was no more tenderness in her voice.

“Get yourself together. This isn’t about you. So stop making it about you. You’re going into that

sanctuary and you’re going to pay your respects to your friend, and you’re going to make it about

Beth. Do you understand me?”

I swallowed hard and wiped my face.

“Do you understand me?” Mom repeated.

I nodded grudgingly, and she took my hand, leading me through the doors.

Reading Addiction Blog Tours MEET and GREET

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?

Definitely. My “day job” is writing articles for a wide range of clients online, so I have made writing my career. The long term goal is to write fiction only, but I suspect it will be very long term.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?

Learning to focus on one thing at a time. I tend to get distracted easily and I work at home, so between kids, dogs and the wonders of social media, it’s easy to forget what it is I’m supposed to be doing. Now and then I read through a rough draft and find sections where I’m not really sure what I was thinking.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?

I have many people outside of my family who’ve been immensely helpful. For a long time I was part of a group on Goodreads that focused on writing fiction and publishing. These people became like family for me, and are still a huge source of support, advice and encouragement.

#4 – What is next for your writing?

I have several novels completed, so I plan to publish at least two more by this time next year. The Legend of Jackson Murphy, which is more of a caper type of story and full of dark humor, is scheduled for release this summer, and after that I’m not sure but I’ll have to make a decision soon.

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?

I have a huge reading addiction. My love of writing grew from my love of a great story. I read everything, regardless of genre. Right now I’m in between books, but George R.R. Martin’s “A Dance with Dragons” is next on my shelf.

Reading Addiction Blog Tours MEET and GREET

 #1 – Do You See Writing as a Career? I do, in fact – for me it definitely takes the time of a part-time career, between the writing and the promoting. It's a creative business, but it is also a financially-driven business, and to be successful I believe an author needs to know both sides of it. It doesn't yet pay my bills, though! For that, I'm a full-time English teacher, and my husband and I joke about the fact that I really do have 2 jobs. I love writing, but I'm not sure I could or would do it as a full-time career. I love teaching teenagers as well, and writing can be such a solitary pursuit that I think I would miss my everyday contact with people if I was in front of my computer all day working.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process? Was? Or is? I always find writing a new story to be a challenge, and most of my books have been through at least three solid drafts before they see publication. For me the hardest part is finessing the subplots and the themes of my stories. Plot has gotten easier over the years, but revising that plot to add complexity remains my biggest challenge.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family? I would give credit to my wonderful beta reader, who's a fellow romance author, and one of my earliest editors. My beta reader gives me spot-on, honest feedback, usually about plot points or characters that aren't working. And one of my early editors (she's since moved to another publishing house, and I miss her like crazy) believed in my writing like no one else at the time. She once told me "I'll see you on the New York Times best-sellers' list one day!"

#4 – What is next for your writing? I'm continuing to write contemporary romance, since I enjoying exploring relationships and emotional connections and happy endings. But I also have a keen interest in branching out and trying my hand at Young Adult. I spend so much time with teenagers that I hear their voices inside my head even when I'm not at work!

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading? I've always loved reading, although I don't have as much time to open books lately. When I do, I've been reading a lot of Young Adult novels, both to get a better feel for the genre and also because there's just so much good stuff out there. I'm especially in awe of John Green, who creates realistic teenage characters like no one else. He's just brilliant.

Reading Addiction Blog Tours MEET and GREET

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?

         I’d love to get to the point where I could write full time. I used to write every day for ten years as a newspaper reporter, and missing writing is what made me throw my hat into the fiction arena. I currently work full time at a 9-1-1 emergency communications center as a manager, and I try to write a few pages a day when I’m not at work. 

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?

          I’m lumped in with a majority of writers with whom I’ve spoken in that editing is tough for me. I tend to read over a lot of my mistakes because I know what I meant to write. Also, sometimes imagery that I see in my head isn’t translated in the words others are reading. When I was editing my first book, Grim, I had already started writing my second book, Wrage, and it became a little difficult at the start of editing to get back into my first project because I’d advanced the story so much.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?

         I’ve got to credit my editors Michael Garrett and Avril Dannenbaum. Garrett worked with Stephen King, and I was honored he chose to work with me. I believe he helped me get accepted by my publisher Damnation Books. Then, Avril, who works for Damnation Books, helped me make Grim tighter and my Adam White character a little more dynamic.

#4 – What is next for your writing?

         I’m busy right now. I’m ironing out the contract for Wrage, which will be released this summer or fall most likely. After that’s settled, I’ll have editing to do for Wrage, which is the second book of my Sons of Darkness series. I’ve also begun writing Book 3 which will be titled Malice and the main character is a rocker loosely based off Marilyn Manson. I’m also working on a story of a small-town girl who gets tricked by human traffickers and thrown into a world of sex slavery. I also recently penned a short story titled High School Sucks which may wind up in a YA anthology being put out by Dark Moon Books.   

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?

       I read a few books a week usually. Right now, I’m reading Lee Child’s The Killing Floor, the debut appearance of Jack Reacher. I watched the film version with Tom Cruise first, and the character sounded compelling to me. I’m about 1/3 of the way through, and I’m not disappointed. Child writes with short, action-packed sentences filled with grit.

The people of Prairieville are about to find out their problems stem from a supernatural source which has lurked in secret for decades. 

THE STORYTELLER’S STORY

As a boy, Joseph Spencer immersed himself in the deductive logic of Sherlock Holmes, the heroic crime fighting of Batman and Spider-Man, and a taste for the tragic with dramas from poets like Shakespeare and Homer. 

Before Joseph took to spinning his own tales, he pursued a career in print sports journalism, graduating with honors from Clinton (IL) High School in 1996 and summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2000. He covered such events as NASCAR’s Subway 500 race in Martinsville, the NBA Draft Camp in Chicago, the Junior College World Series, and Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League All-Star Game during a ten-year career throughout the Midwest. Now, he works as an emergency telecommunications specialist with an Illinois police department. The combination of years of writing experience with a background working with law enforcement professionals gave rise to his writing aspirations. 

Joseph was married Dr. Amy (Waggoner) Spencer, an accomplished veterinary doctor, on March 14, 2012. He received word his debut novel was accepted by his publisher, Damnation Books, the next day. Joseph and Amy look forward to their honeymoon in Paris in September 2012. Murphy, a 15-year-old orange tabby, is perhaps the most vocal member of the family. The Spencer family enjoys reading Charlaine Harris, George R.R. Martin, Mary Janice Davidson, and most paranormal stories. The Spencers also enjoy quoting movie lines from The Princess Bride, Rain Man, Bridesmaids, and Office Space.
