Week Blitz: Beacon Road Bedlam by Ian Lewis #excerpt #mystery #supernatural #giveaway

Supernatural Thriller/Mystery
Date Published: 4/29/2017

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

When Sheriff Eustace Hildersham comes into possession of his father's once-lost revolver, he suspects there is more to the story than he remembers. He sets out on a personal investigation only to find himself caught between another family's grudge and a dogged reporter with malicious intent. Hildersham continues to search for the truth, not knowing it will lead to another appearance of the Driver and his phantom Camaro.

Book three in the experimental Driver series.

Excerpt

The pockmarked road stretched out to meet the gutter-ash gray of the horizon. Bleak and without end, it drew a bead to nowhere, anywhere. Dreary, leafless trees peppered chalky smudges of landscape on either side.

A black car tore down the road at a furious pace. The motor howled a guttural wail; the exhaust snarled in response. With a long hood and wide, fastback body, the Camaro sailed across the asphalt as if slung by a slingshot.

Behind the wheel, the Driver pressed his foot firm against the accelerator, his etched face set in grim persistence. He drove like he was being chased, like if he slowed even for a moment he would be overtaken.

A mop of shaggy hair fell across his forehead and neck. He wore the same red flannel as he had the day before, and the day before that. It was the same red flannel he had worn for the last eighteen years; he died wearing it.

Ian Lewis prefers not to be bound by a particular genre. Though the inspiration for his work varies, it often finds roots in something he dreamt. He strives for a gritty realism and maintains an interest in the humanity of his characters. His hope is that readers find themselves haunted by his stories in the sense that the narrative sticks with them long after they've finished reading, leaving them with a subtle restlessness for more. Mr. Lewis is the author of "The Camaro Murders," "Lady in Flames," "Beacon Road Bedlam," "Power in the Hands of One," and "Godspeed, Carry My Bullet." He has been writing since 2002.

Tara Johnson's sacrifices are about to pay off: a senior executive at thirty-five at a Fortune 500 company, she's one of the two finalists in line for a Managing Director position. Unfortunately, her rival of fifteen years, the charming, infuriating Richard Boyd, is just as qualified, and unlike her, he's willing to cross pretty much every line to get what he wants.

Of all the things Tara stored in the attic to make it to the top, it's her personal life she misses the most. That is, until she starts a steamy affair with sex god Aidan, her direct report. Interoffice relationships with a subordinate can mean the end of a career, and when Richard finds out, it's the perfect opportunity to take his high-heeled nemesis out, especially since he's still nursing a grudge against Tara for rejecting him years ago.

But Tara's increasingly domineering lover has his own dark secrets, endangering more than just her career. As her liaison spirals out of control, salvation will come from the man she always thought she hated, and perhaps the only one to truly understand her.

Excerpt

I sauntered to the elevator with my well-practiced “confident” walk, stretched my arm to push the button—
And my high-heeled sandal slipped.
My knee gave in, and I grabbed onto the first thing I could reach to prevent me from the total embarrassment of ending up on the floor in front of everyone. I turned to thank the helpful soul…and came face-to-face with Richard and a lazy twist of his lips settled in the corner of his mouth. I continued to squeeze his arm and my chest brushed his side. But it was more than that; he placed his other arm on my lower back to support me, and I felt a slight tug. The bastard pulled me closer to him in front of everyone watching and my space was suddenly invaded by the scent of his cologne. By Richard.
My insides tightened, and my lips pained as I was still trying to keep them in a semblance of a smile in front of everyone.
“You okay there?” he asked, his expression no less mocking than it was earlier. “You seem flustered. I understand. You finally get to see my place.”
The following moment was the testament to the long road that got me to that point in my career. All the brutal hours I’d slaved in the office, the hard work, missing friends’ events because of last-minute urgent assignments, working through my own birthdays—it all came down to that. My self-control to not kill Richard when every inch of my body believed spending the next twenty years in prison would be well worth it.
I smiled into his snake-green eyes, pushed his arm away and stepped into the elevator. Just as the doors closed separating us, as he thankfully decided to stay with the next group, I managed to think of an appropriate response. But it was too late.

Kate nodded, a faint colour rising in her cheeks. ‘I had a good dowry and Richard fair prospects.’ She looked up at him, holding his eyes with her clear gaze. ‘And we loved each other.’

Dear God, this bloody war, Jonathan thought.

‘And if it were not for the war, you would be living in wedded bliss in Barton Manor, surrounded by a brood of children,’ he said.

Kate looked away and he knew his observation had hit home. He reached for her hand and when she tried to pull away he tightened his grip, forcing her to look up at him.

‘I’m sorry, Kate, that was a thoughtless remark. I’m the last person who has any right to do that.’ He released her hand. ‘From what I knew of Richard, he did not have the heart of a soldier.’

He knew more about Richard Ashley than he was prepared to reveal. A scholar, not a soldier. Richard should be at home at Barton Manor with this woman and their children. Not dead in the ground at the age of twenty-two.

Kate looked up at him, her brow creased in puzzlement, and he cursed himself for revealing too much.

‘What could you possibly have known of him? The Thorntons have been estranged from the Ashleys for over thirty years.’ This time he bit his tongue and when he didn’t reply she continued.  ‘To answer your question, Richard may not have gone willingly to the war but he fought bravely against the terrible odds in the North. He followed Sir Thomas Fairfax into hell during those early years.’

Jonathan nodded. ‘Fairfax’s men had it hard in those early years.’ He paused. ‘Was he with Fairfax that day at Marston Moor?’

‘Of course,’ Kate replied. ‘Were you there? Is it possible you faced Richard?’

Of course Jonathan had been there with Prince Rupert’s cavalry. It had been a bloodbath.  Marston Moor had put in train a series of tragic events in his own life that had nothing to do with the battle.

He swallowed and gave a barely perceptible nod. ‘I was on the other flank with Rupert.’

‘What did it matter?’ A rare flash of anger rose in Kate. ‘You wouldn’t have known Richard if you had met on the battlefield.’

Yes I would, he thought.

‘That is the tragedy of a civil war, Kate.’

She didn’t seem to notice that he had used her given name. Her eyes blazed with anger and misery. ‘They brought him home to die. It was a horrible death.’ Her voice cracked.

She lowered her head and took several deep shuddering breaths that wracked her body.

Without thinking, Jonathan lifted his hand to her face, tilting her chin so she looked at him. Her eyes swam with unshed tears. Tears he had caused.

‘So many deaths. Too many, Kate. Believe me, it’s not always easy to be the survivor. I may not be dead but I have lost all that is important to me. It’s a hollow victory over death.’

So many deaths...Marston Moor and afterwards, Oxford. He had run at life, stumbled into the path of innocent people, and he had survived while they had died.

Tour Kick Off: The War Queen by @JMRobison #fantasy

300 years ago, the people dethroned their king and queen to prevent another tyranny. Now instead, the people nominate a State Head every three years and Altarn is the first female to hold the position. She’s used to tolerating the biases of men but Kaelin, the State Head of his territory, has declared her incompetent and has even, according to Altarn, threatened to steal her land – she believes he wants to make himself king. Believing she must “dethrone” Kaelin, Altarn rides to her last ally to ask for aid in the war against Kaelin she knows is coming.  But in her absence an army launches an attack… and it’s not Kaelin’s.

Taking advantage of the startling situation, Kaelin kidnaps Altarn so he can take her land without her in the way. Soon realizing he needs her help to fight this army instead, he releases her and, since Altarn’s army is too small to win the war alone, she is forced to accept his help, but payment for his help will be her land. No one believes Kaelin is secretly trying to make himself king, so after the battle is won, alone in her knowledge and lacking allies, Altarn must become the War Queen of legend to dethrone another king… though she unexpectedly dethrones his heart instead.

> Chapter 2
The Beginning
of the End
June 1, 2006

Baghdad, Iraq

I leave the Humvee running and step out into the hot street. The intense sun beats down on the back of my neck. Even with sunglasses on it seems obnoxiously bright. Fucking Iraq. Miserably hot, and here we are in the middle of the damn day, out in the worst of it.
My M-16A2 rifle feels like an old, familiar lover in my hands. The strangest sense of déjà vu washes over me. “Weird,” I mumble to myself, prying my eyes off of my rifle.
I quickly scan the traffic circle, soaking in all of the details. There is no traffic coming through; there’s a Humvee at each intersection, blocking off everything. No way in, no way out.
I glance up to Mike in the turret, manning the .50 caliber machine gun. I have known him for as long as I can remember. Mike was my next-door neighbor when we were kids. His mom used to babysit me while mine went to work, and she’d make us peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and then send us right back out to play. She always kept strawberry jam on hand because she knew it was my favorite. Hell, she was practically a second mother to me.
He is my best friend. He is more than that— he is my brother.
Mike’s back is to me as he watches the Iraqis, making sure none of them try to get into our perimeter. A horn honks and a driver gestures impatiently at the intersection. Mike quickly swivels his machine gun toward the car, silencing both the horn and the driver. I smile. We survived basic training together, then jump school in the stifling Fort Benning heat. We somehow got lucky enough to be stationed together. A sympathetic first sergeant then assigned us to the same squad.
I wipe the sweat from my brow. It is instantly replaced as the hot sun beats down on me. One bead of sweat forms on the scar on my hairline and runs down my face, following my jawline down to my chin, where it hangs on stubbornly.
I reach up and wipe the sweat from the scar under my helmet, and shiver. My mind drifts for a split second to Mike. I close my eyes and swallow back the lump rising in my throat.
Another small shiver runs down my spine despite the heat. I have that feeling you get when you know someone is right behind you and then you turn around and no one is there. When I turn around, I see a car parked on the high overpass we usually cross.
My heart starts to beat a little faster and my palms start to sweat more than usual in this awful heat. “I don’t like that fucking car,” I say.
“What?” Mike yells over his shoulder without taking his eyes off of the cars impatiently waiting for us to allow them through.
“I said I don’t like that fucking car over there.” This time I point at it with my left hand and hold my rifle tightly in my right. “I mean, I have never seen a car parked on that bridge. We almost always cross that bridge. That would leave us nowhere to go but right next to it,” I yell with a frown. “Doesn’t that seem weird?”
“Yeah, it is weird,” Mike agrees with a shrug.
I glance up at Mike for a moment, just a split second and then back to the car.
“I’m telling you I have a really bad feeling—” The car explodes with a deafening roar, shattering the peaceful silence of the afternoon.
The blast lifts me off of my feet and throws me backward into the Humvee. My head slams hard into the door behind me, my helmet bouncing off with a thud. The world spins for a moment and goes dark.
