Week Blitz: Fallen Star Series by @candyjstarr #excerpt and #giveaway

New Adult
Date Published: February 7,  2017

Working for a cranky, old hermit in an isolated house sounds like Ruby’s idea of heaven – but her boss isn't quite what she expects.

Tex is a fugitive from the rock and roll world – a tragedy abruptly halted his career. No one knows why he quit, no one knows where he is.

The two of them live in the same house, avoiding each other, until Tex screws up, endangering their lives and forcing them to move into close quarters. Suddenly, the idea of human contact seems more appealing, if only with each other. The sanctuary they have built is enough for Ruby -- the man she grows to love is Tex the hermit, not Tex the rock star -- but the outside world encroaches.

She thinks their fledgling love can’t shine brighter than the rock dream but can Ruby bear to let Tex go?

EXCERPT

A man stood in the middle of the kitchen who most definitely had to be a burglar. He wore a hoodie and stubble covered half his face. He looked like he hadn’t bathed in a while. He wasn’t a ghost but he was scary.

“Stop right there, buddy,” I said.

I tried to sound tough but my heart pounded like a wild thing. He had a look of desperate danger in his eyes and looked like he hadn’t been outside much. Maybe because he’d been in prison.

He really did seem like he might have killed a man once. Maybe more than once. Bits of broken crockery splayed around his feet – those plates I’d spent all day cleaning.

I lunged at him, even shocking myself with my bravery. I was the head bitch of this house and no low life was stepping on my turf. I’d spent the day cleaning that kitchen and he was NOT going to trash it. The rush of adrenalin overruled my brain. He obviously wasn’t a guy to be messed with but he was near my phone. I had some pretty damn personal stuff on that phone. No way was he stealing it.

As I got close to him, he grabbed my hand and twisted the pencil out of it, then he backed me up against the bench, pressing his body against mine. He had me pinned tight.

I struggled but couldn’t get loose. He hadn’t looked that strong but he had some power in his grip. His body felt like steel against mine, harsh and unyielding. And he towered over me.

I’d die there in that kitchen and no one would even find out until I was just bare bones.

I didn’t know what was going on with his hands. My skin buzzed in a most disturbing way where he touched me. Was it a chemical thing?

I swung my foot and I kicked him really hard in the ankle. He didn’t loosen his grip. He didn’t even react. I was screwed.

Maybe it was really inappropriate in the circumstances but I noticed that despite his ragged, unwashed appearance, he smelt really good. The smell of him tantalised my nose and stirred some of those nerve endings that never, ever stirred in my body. It just wouldn’t do. It might’ve been an age since I’d been that close to a man but I sure as hell wasn’t desperate enough to get turned on by a manky house robber.

“You’ll want to bugger off, buddy. My husband is in the other room and you won’t want to mess with him.” I figured, if he thought there was another man in the house, it might scare him off. Not likely but it was worth a shot. He might not know that I was alone in this house in the middle of nowhere with no one but a feeble old man.

The man chuckled and let go of my arms. For a moment, his face softened and his eyes wrinkled into a smile – just for a split second – until he put the tough guy face back on.

That smile disarmed me, like the zap of an electric fence that makes the fillings in your mouth zing and your body hairs stand on end. He really was one of your better-looking robbers. He had a chiselled face and well-defined jawline. Not to mention, strong eyebrows. He leaned against the bench like he owned the place. I guess robbers could be disarmingly good-looking with a huge measure of arrogance thrown in.

About the Author

Candy J. Starr used to be a band manager until she realised that the band she managed was so lacking in charisma that they actually sucked the charisma out of any room they played. “Screw you,” she said, leaving them to wallow in obscurity – totally forgetting that they owed her big bucks for video equipment hire.

Candy has filmed and interviewed some big names in the rock business, and a lot of small ones. She’s seen the dirty little secrets that go on in the back rooms of band venues. She’s seen the ugly side of rock and the very pretty one.

But, of course, everything she writes is fiction.

 Rose

Whore. Slut. Tramp.

I don’t want to believe the words, but they’re true. Having sex with strangers temporarily affords me the necessary control to quiet the demons from my nightmares. But each unfulfilling encounter leaves me more emotionally empty than before. I’m trapped in a dead, brown shell, unable to break free.

Until the day he walks into my life.

Colin is everything that's good and pure–a beacon of light to my dark, lost soul. His music is a soothing balm, warming long-frozen places inside me. His kindness disarms me, making me long for more. But to have more, I’d need to reveal the horrors of my past.

And I can’t tell anyone. It’ll tear me apart.

Colin

I’ve been waiting for her all my life.

From the moment I laid eyes her, I knew Rose was my soul mate. I’m drawn to her inner beauty and yearn to show her the love she’s never known. The pain reflected in her lovely amber eyes rouses emotions deep within me, stirring the music in my soul and making my fingers take flight over the keyboard.

But Rose is a woman holding closely guarded secrets.

More than my next breath, I want to quell the haunted look in her eyes ... heal her broken spirit and make her whole again. She doesn't believe that's possible. But I won't give up.
Not until she lets me love her–all of her.

Warning: Contains graphic descriptions of abuse that may distress some readers.

Chapter 1

Rose

I slide the last box of my belongings out of the back seat of Olivia's car and close the door with my hip. For a moment, I stand there breathing deeply of the fresh pine-scented mountain air. In the distance, beyond the brick building that houses our dorm, the majestic San Francisco peaks rise up in their cloak of foggy clouds to meet a clear blue sky. It's good to be back at Northern Arizona University. The city of Flagstaff and this school have been my haven since I left my old life behind two years ago. I don't miss it. No one in their right mind would. It was nothing short of hell. In a way, my life didn't really start until I moved here. It's still far from perfect, but whose life is? At least it's mine to live now, and no one can make me do anything I don't want to.

Funny that I lived that old life just two short hours away from here, yet no one I used to know has ever tried to find me–or if they tried, they haven't been successful. I'm glad. I don't want to see anyone from that time. No, that isn't entirely true. The only person I'd like to see again is my old friend, Emily. Other than her, I couldn’t care less. The people to whom I'm related by blood aren't my family anymore. The only real family I have now are Olivia, her mom, Abigail, and her younger sister, Jennifer. They took me in when I had no place else to go and helped me carve out this new life for myself.

The ache in my arms reminds me that I need to relieve them of their burden. I head for the main door of the dorm. One of the girls who lives down the hall from me and Olivia sees me coming and holds it open for me. I nod my thanks, then head up the stairs for the third floor where our room is located. I've made this trip up and down about ten times today, unloading all our stuff. By the time I reach the second floor, the strength in my arms is flagging and my legs are screaming to end this torturous exercise. After taking a short breather at the landing, I continue plodding up the next flight of stairs.

At the sound of heavy, rapid footfalls behind me, I move to one side to allow the person who is quickly gaining ground on me to pass by. My cumbersome load bumps into the railing, causing my foot to catch on the next step. As I'm about to pitch down the stairs, a pair of strong hands catch me at the waist.

“Whoa, there! Easy,” a sexy, masculine voice rumbles in my ear.

I automatically stiffen. I don't like being touched–especially by strange men–without my permission. Knowing he's only trying to help, I take a deep breath and will my body to relax.

He leans to one side, and out of the corner of my eye, I can see he's smiling.

“Are you OK?”

“Yeah, I'm fine.” You can let go of me now, I resist the urge to say out loud.

“Here, why don't you let me help you with that?” Before I can protest, he moves around in front of me and lifts the heavy box out of my hands. “So where are we headed?”

“Ah … next floor.” I point upward. “Room 329.”

He continues up the stairs with me trailing behind. The door to mine and Olivia's dorm room is open, but before entering he calls out, “Knock, knock.”

“Hi! Did you need something?” I hear Olivia's friendly voice coming from inside the room, but his tall, muscular frame blocks her from my view.

“Just helping your roommate with her stuff.” He lifts his arms, indicating the box.

“Oh! Well, bring it on in.”

He enters the room, and I follow.

Olivia finally sees me. “I was wondering what happened to you. You were gone for a while.”

Having placed the box on one of the beds, my helper turns around. “I'm afraid that's partly my fault. I nearly knocked her over in the stairwell. I figured the least I could do is carry her things.”

“Thank you,” I say to one of the buttons on the front of his shirt. I can't bring myself to make eye contact. It's something I tend to avoid with men, unless I'm on the prowl. I'm afraid it might encourage him to do something I don't want. Like ask me out.

“I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Colin … Colin O'Malley.” He offers his hand, first to Olivia–who introduces herself, too–and then to me.

It would be rude not to accept, so I place my hand in his. It almost completely envelopes mine, and at once, I notice his long fingers. Even though his hands are on the large side, there's a gentleness in them I don't expect. Now that I think about it, once I got over the initial shock of his touch, I'd noticed it in the stairwell, too. It also didn't escape me that he'd behaved like a gentleman and hadn't tried to “accidentally” cop a feel. He'd only held me until he was sure I'd regained my footing.

“So …” He leans down a little. “Do you have a name?”

Realizing I've been daydreaming, and still staring at his chest to boot, my face starts to heat. “Yeah, i-it's Rose … Rose Harmon.”

I finally lift my gaze to find him smiling at me. He has a gorgeous, model-perfect smile with straight white teeth. And wonder of wonders, it actually shows in his sparkling eyes. I don't think I've ever seen eyes quite so blue. They're the color of the sky I just saw outside. He has dark hair, almost jet black, with an unruly lock that falls down over his forehead, giving him a rakish look. I don't think I've ever seen a man this handsome in all my life, except maybe a few times in the movie magazines Emily and I used to look at in the library as teenagers.

Still smiling and holding my hand, he says, “Rose” as though he's trying out my name to see if it fits.

The sound of it coming from his lips makes my stomach do an uncharacteristic flip-flop, and for a moment I forget to breathe.

PROMO Blitz: The House with the Green Roof by @_AshishVikram_ #excerpt #giveaway

Humor/Suspense

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Veenu has just graduated from IIT Delhi. He arrives in Bangalore, only to find that the plum software job he had landed himself is not waiting for him. As consolation, a beautiful girl called Vini claims to have been waiting for him instead. But things are not quite what they seem to be. A dead body appears behind Veenu just as he is about to put his arm around Vini in the dark night. A mysterious man with a hairstyle that looks like a lava crater and fond of tomato juice keeps appearing almost as frequently as the signature suspense tune. The chief inspector, with a habit of pulling at his hair, does not believe Veenu’s incredible stories. And what does all this have to do with the Japanese Prime Minister and a beautiful Race Horse’s behind? The clues are hidden in the humor!

Excerpt

Vini and Veenu were ushered into two wooden chairs on the opposite side of the desk and sat facing the Chief Inspector. Mahalingam went and stood next to the Chief Inspector. His stomach rested rather comfortably on the desk. He picked up a notepad and pencil from the desk. The Chief Inspector pushed the computer monitor and keyboard to one side from in front of his face. He had his own notepad and pencil in front of him. They were ready for the interrogation.

“Name?” said the Chief Inspector staring into his notepad.

“Veenu” said Veenu.

“Name?” said the Chief Inspector again.

“Veenu” said Veenu.

The Chief Inspector looked up. He scowled at Veenu. “Your name” he said pointing at Vini.

“Vini” said Vini.

The Chief Inspector looked back into his notepad. “Address?” he said.

“No B 79, Koramangala, 9th Block, 2nd Cross, Bangalore, India” said Veenu. There was a pause as the Chief Inspector wrote this down. He looked up from his notepad into Veenu’s eyes.

“It is a beautiful house with the green roof” said Veenu helpfully.

The Chief Inspector scowled. “Answer only when asked” he said.

“Yes sir” said Veenu.

“What do you do?” said the Chief Inspector.

“I am a software engineer” said Veenu.

“Which Company?”

“Corn Systems.”

“What?”

“Corn. Corn. C-o-r-n Systems” Veenu spelt it out while trying to draw the outline of a corn on the cob in the air with this fingers.

The Chief Inspector scowled. “How long have you been working there?”

Veenu considered. “Zero days” he said.

The Chief Inspector stared dirtily at Veenu. “Don’t make a fool of me” he said. “You software engineers think that the Bangalore police are a bunch of fools. Do you? Do you work for this… this” he consulted his notes. “Corn” he continued scornfully “Systems or not?”

“Yes sir” said Veenu. “I mean no sir.”

The Chief Inspector dropped his pencil forcefully on the table and gave Veenu his dirtiest look so far. “Yes or no?” he shouted. “Mahalingam!”

On this cue, Mahalingam scowled at Veenu. “Answer properly” he said.

“No sir” said Veenu. “I used to work there but I… I got fired. I am not working anywhere now.”

“Not working” repeated the Chief Inspector and wrote something in his notepad. “How long did you work at this, this Corn Systems before you got fired?”

Veenu considered his answer carefully. “Zero days” he said.

The Chief Inspector scowled his biggest scowl so far. “Mahalingam!” he growled.

“Answer properly” Mahalingam scowled at Veenu.

“Did you work for this Corn Systems or not?” asked the Chief Inspector sternly.

“Yes sir” said Veenu. “I mean no sir. I got fired before I joined.”

The Chief Inspector stared at Veenu for a while. “Where did you work before you did not join Corn Systems?” he said finally.

“Nowhere” said Veenu.

The Chief Inspector stared harder.

“I was studying at IIT. IIT Delhi sir. I just came to Bangalore yesterday.” Veenu explained

“First day. Murder” said the Chief Inspector softly, shaking his head.

‘And this girl?” said the Chief Inspector pointing at Vini but looking at Veenu. “Your girlfriend?”

“No. No” said Veenu vehemently. “She is not my girlfriend.”

“Then what is she?” said the Chief Inspector. “Your wife?”

“No. No No.” Veenu laughed. “She is… she is just my friend.”

“Just your friend” said he Chief Inspector scornfully. He turned to Vini. “Address?” he said.

“No B 79, Koramangala, 9th Block, 2nd Cross, Bangalore” said Vini.

The Chief Inspector’s brow furrowed. He seemed to be deep in thought. “Where have I heard that address before?” he said to himself softly. He looked at the ceiling.

“Just now” said Veenu helpfully. “From me.”

The Chief Inspector looked at his notes. “Yes!” he said. He turned towards Vini. “This joker stays with you?” he asked.

“He is not a joker” she said firmly.

The Chief Inspector scowled at her. “This is my police station” he said. “If I say he is a joker then he is a joker.”

“Mahalingam” he barked. “Is this fellow a joker or not?”

“I am not sure sir” said Mahalingam. “I will investigate.” He wrote something in his notepad.

The Chief Inspector scowled at Mahalingam. He turned back towards Vini. “Do you stay with this jo.. fellow? He asked.

“No” said Vini. “It is not like that.”

“You stay at B-79, Koramangala?” asked the Chief Inspector.

“Yes” said Vini.

“Which floor?”

“Ground floor” said Vini.

“And you stay at B-79 Koramangala” said the Chief Inspector turning towards Veenu.

“Yes sir” said Veenu.

“On which floor?”

“On the ground floor” said Veenu.

“Then you stay together in the same house on the same floor” concluded the Chief Inspector triumphantly.

“Yes, but I don’t stay with him.” Vini was quite firm about it.

The Chief Inspector gave Vini one of his choicest dirty looks. “You think that the Bangalore police consist of a bunch of fools?” he shouted. He wagged his finger in Vini’s face. “I want straight answers from now on.”

“Mahalingam” he thundered.

Mahalingam scowled at Vini. “Answer properly” he growled.

The Chief Inspector considered himself to be a patient man but just getting basic information such as name and address from these two buffoons was proving to be a

challenge. The Chief Inspector’s blood pressure was rising. The doctor had advised him to stay calm. “Calm down” he said to himself under his breath. He closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. He felt better now. He was ready to proceed.

“Housewife or working?” he asked Vini.

“Working” she replied.

“Where?”

“Corn systems” said Vini.

The Chief Inspector stared at Vini. Dare he ask her for how long?

“But I too got fired before I joined” said Vini quickly. She smiled sweetly.

The Chief Inspector scowled at her. This was not getting anywhere. He decided to skip the preliminaries and get to the point. He forced himself to smile at Veenu. “Ok. Tell me” he said. “What did you see yesterday?”

“Not much” said Veenu. “I got here yesterday and did not get time to see anything. Of course I did see the airport. Nice airport you have here. And I saw whatever I could from the car on the way to ITPL. It was a nice drive. Bangalore is a beautiful city. I saw some beautiful flowering trees along the way in Cubbon Park. The trees were fully covered with purple flowers with no leaves at all. Quite amazing actually. And then later I looked around a bit at ITPL. Amazing! Different kind of amazing than the trees of course. I was impressed by…”

Veenu stopped in mid sentence because he noticed that the Chief Inspector had put his head down on the table, his chin pressing against it. He had caught hold of the tufts of hair that were sticking out from both sides of his head and was pulling hard, as if he was trying to pull out his hair.

Veenu smiled. “Ah. That explains why his hair sticks out like that” he thought.

“Stop. Stop. Stop” shouted the Chief Inspector. He raised his head from the table. “In the night? What did you see in the night?”

“Oh? In the night?” said Veenu. “Vini took me to this really nice rooftop restaurant with this really interesting shop on the ground floor. Vini liked the translucent candles with the real flower petals encased in the wax. I wondered what happens to those petals when the candle burns. I think the petals might be catching fire causing the flame to change colors in interesting ways from time to time…”

“Stop!” The Chief Inspector’s head was back on the table and he was pulling his hair out even harder than before.

Veenu stopped. He thought he had been doing a good job of describing the candles. He looked quizzically at the Chief Inspector.

“Don’t make a fool of me” said the Chief Inspector in a low sinister voice. “I am not interested in candles. Tell me about the murder.”

“Yes” said Veenu. “It was gruesome. The Lava Crater Head Man killed the Software Engineer with a knife.”

Memoir, Business

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

In this debut memoir, a former casino employee discusses how he thinks his former bosses acted on his many suggestions.
Batieufaye tells of working for a Resort Casino, operated by Pequot tribal leaders from 1996 to 2004. He began as a kitchen worker and later moved on to guest services.
In this book, he says that he believes his company acted upon ideas he submitted through the company’s suggestion program without recognizing his contributions.
