Tour Kick Off - Meet and Greet - She Likes it Rough by GVR Corcillo

Contemporary / Chick Lit / Romantic Comedy

Date Published: July 2013

Can daring adventures with an adrenaline junkie give a daydreaming pushover the courage she needs in order to make her life count for something?

When a freak fast-food accident almost kills scaredy-cat Lisa Flyte, she decides it's time to get a backbone and really start living life! But how is a shrinking violet like Lisa supposed to get assertive all of a sudden after a lifetime of watching from the couch?

Jack Hawkins, that's how. When Lisa finds out that the outdoor extremist from her MBA classes needs a clueless urbanite to test his top-secret line of adventure gear for beginners, she gets the most outlandish idea of her life: she will be his undercover test dummy if he helps her become brave on their adventures in the wild.

They strike a deal. But can Lisa use her outdoor moxie to become the alpha hero of her everyday life? Will she find the grit to pursue a career she really wants or the nerve to stand up to her bullying family?

And will she get gutsy enough to go after Jack? He's a man who's not afraid of anything...except maybe of falling for Lisa.

GVR Corcillo’s debut chick lit novel, She Likes It Rough, was awarded Best Indie Book of 2013 by the Rebecca’s Reads Choice Awards. The romantic comedy also took first place in the Humor category. RebeccasReads.com established the awards program to pay tribute to authors who are self-published or have had their books published by a subsidy publisher, small press, university press, or independent book publisher.

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?
Absolutely. I am burning the candle at both ends, in the middle, and upside down in order to launch my writing career with my debut chick lit novel She Likes It Rough. I know from years of writing and connecting with writers in Romance Writers of America that the career of a writer entails HARD work, but it is work I want to spring out of bed and do every day. I am working towards the day when I can afford to quit my day job and write as my one and only job.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?
Writing the first draft. Coming up with the story and working it out happens pretty quickly in my head. And I LOVE editing once I've got the thing written. But getting the first draft from my head into the computer? Ugh! So DIFFICULT to take the vivid picture in my imagination and splash it onto the screen just so.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family? Leonard Wang Kingsley. We were friends in middle school and high school, and I re-connected with him at our class reunion. We hadn't seen one another or talked in years. When he found out about my book and my writing aspirations, he kicked my butt to get me to self-publish! He edited my book and helped me launch the novel on CreateSpace and Kindle. If it weren't for Leonard, I would still be dreaming of a life as an author, instead of LIVING the life or an author. Thanks, Len!

#4 – What is Next for Your Writing?
I am writing my next chick lit novel, Queen of the Universe. When a control-freak TV writer tries to convince the handyman working on her house that he's perfect to play the sexy bounty hunter in her new show, she figures out–  though she works to deny it!– that real people and their destinies aren't nearly so easy to manipulate as the ones she writes about. I am having a lot of fun with Queen because my main character Lola's trajectory is  quite the opposite of Lisa's, from She Likes It Rough. Lisa needs to grow into herself and find out where she fits in her world, whereas Lola needs to realize that while she thinks she has all the answers, she doesn't, and that's okay.

#5 – Do you have an Addiction to Reading as well as Writing? If so, What are You Currently Reading?
I am so addicted to reading. I drive a lot for my day job, so I always have a book playing on DVD or Kindle in my car. Right now I am listening to Storm Front, a Virgil Flowers mystery by John Sandford. I adore not only the character Virgil Flowers, a cowboy/surfer country cop in Minnesota, but the evolution and creation of the Virgil Flowers books. John Sandford found great success with his Lucas Davenport mysteries. When Sandford decided to help out some of his writer friends, retired or laid-off  journalists with no pensions to speak of, he created the Virgil Flowers series. He sketches out the stories, his friends write them, and they all split the profits. The books are tightly written, compelling, and addictive.

With her Ivy League education, white trash sensibility, and pop culture savvy, GVR Corcillo delights in writing chick lit about characters who try not to trip as they valiantly march to their own bongo beat.
She didn't start writing right away. First, she worked in a greenhouse, a supermarket, a movie theatre, a potpourri-stuffing factory, an electrical fixtures plant, a book warehouse, a metal-perforating factory, a video store, several movie studios, a children's museum, a radio station, and a bar. She also taught high school in Watts and South Central Los Angeles.
But none of these fit the bill for what she always wanted to be when she grew up - a writer. So, she won some writing contests, hit the New York TimesBestsellers List with her first short story, and got a screenplay produced.
Geralyn Vivian Ruane Corcillo, a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, lives in North Hollywood with her husband Ron, a television comedy writer. They are both New York Giants fans.
