Tour Kick Off: In the Garden Room by @Blunder_Woman #giveaway #interview

Historical Suspense, Gothic
Date Published: July 18, 2016
Publisher: Blunder Woman Productions

It is Chicago. 1910. Eleven-year-old Lillian March looks over her mother’s dead body with a sense of relief.
As a poor woman, her mother, Cora, never had any real choices or happiness with her life. Cora and Lillian flee to the bustling city of Chicago, where she is certain she will have the life of opulence she deserves.
Cora and Lillian face deep hardships in turn-of-the-century Chicago as Cora’s mind continues its downward spiral. With no money and no hope for income, Cora sells Lillian to The Garden Room, a brothel, where young girls and desperate women are kept like flowers in a jar.
John March comes looking for his daughter and his wife in an attempt to rescue them, but even if he finds them alive, is rescue really possible?
IN THE GARDEN ROOM is an exploration of madness, desire and two women’s choices in a time when they weren’t really allowed to choose.

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?
I’d love to, but I’ve yet to make money at it. It is a career in the sense of how seriously I take it and how much work I put into it. Luckily, my day job is narrating audiobooks, so I get to live the book life that way.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?
I think it’s focusing in and committing to one story. It’s getting started that’s the hardest for me. Because I write across genres, I have to kind of figure out what mood I’m in, and for how long I want to stay in that space. Do I feel like working for a year on a comedy, a mystery, or a scary novel? That’s the hardest part for me.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?
I had a partner I worked with on IN THE GARDEN ROOM. We met in an online course that didn’t work out, but we clicked. We’d exchange chapters of our novels bi-weekly and it really kept me producing new work, and the feedback was amazing.

#4 – What is next for your writing?
I’m stuck in that “What next”. Part of me wants to do another romantic comedy (a sequel to my book Blunder Woman), but I’m also really itching to write a good old fashioned horror story. Then again, I like the creepy world of IN THE GARDEN room and am thinking of writing another novel. IN THE GARDEN room is, essentially, a prequel to TUNNEL VISION AND OTHER STORIES, so I’m interested in continuing with that. If you have any input, let me know!

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?
I used to read for pleasure all the time. Now I read for money! And that’s even more pleasurable. I get great books to narrate. Right now it’s IMPACT WINTER by S. M. Freedman, an apocalyptic tale that’s really fun. And then I’m narrating a True Crime novel called POISONED LOVE by Caitlin Rother. And then I’m booked for some romances. Quite a variety!

Tour Kick Off: Synchronicity by @KTjebbenAuthor

YA supernatural romance novel with NA and contemporary fantasy appeal
Date Published: April 2016

“Hayden is alive.” Those three words hurl Kate and her friends towards a mission unlike any other. While honing Kate’s Asteri powers, Kate and Alex delve deeper into their relationship as they untangle Kate from Sarah’s past. Zoe and Evan are entrusted with the task of destroying a magical ring and finding a cure for a poison that threatens their existence. And Nick is determined to locate and free Hayden from whatever monster imprisons her. Working together, their success will ensure that Hayden will no longer be a ghost sketched on paper, but a woman reborn to thrive in Nick’s arms.

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?

Of course! Although writing is not your typical career - there are no salary guarantees or health plan coverage - it can be very rewarding. Being a writer means that in all places and at all times you are gathering experiences that you can use in your work.

The good times and the bad times can be rich sources that a writer can draw from and sow into her work, opening people’s minds to new ideas or by simply providing them an escape from reality. So writers, like teachers, do not work tirelessly for the money, they do it for love. Love of the characters, the escape, and the desire to bring joy to others.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?

That’s a difficult question to answer. Each stage has its own simplicities and challenges. I love the rough draft stage because I’m working out the bones of the story, sort of “setting up the framework.” Nothing has to be perfect, which is great, but at the same time I don’t want it to sound rough. So instead of flying through the rough draft and getting my ideas down as quickly as possible, I think about everything and dwell on individual words much more than I should. I love the revision stage because I can read and reread the story in order to strengthen and tighten a paragraph or plot point. The challenge comes when, at some point, I have to just say I am finished editing and move on to publishing.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?

I have to give my husband credit. He’s always willing to help me when I have a question about word choice or some other detail. However, I have a few good friends (Melanie, Emily, and Michelle) who are always there for me. I hand over my babies (rough drafts) to them, and they graciously give me their advice. Their help is invaluable because it’s so difficult for a writer to know how a reader will perceive the events in a book.

#4 – What is next for your writing?

I’m so excited to wrap-up the Scintillate Series with Synchronicity. It was fun creating another dimension and conjuring up unique characters. It allowed me to experiment with creativity and think outside of the box, but now I’m thrilled to be entering the romance genre. Blood Kiss is the title of the first book in the Savage Security series. It was published in June of 2016.

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing?

Yes! I do a lot of reading when I’m at the pool with my girls or taking them to their after school activities. I also listen to books on my iPhone as I do my chores around the house. Then at night I snuggle under the sheets with my iPhone and read until I can hardly keep my eyes open. This means that I always have at least two books going at a time. At this pace, I can read a book within a day or two. Right now I’m focusing on romantic/psychological thrillers.

“Hayden is alive.” Three words hurl Kate and her friends into danger. Together, they will free Hayden from the monster that holds her.

This or That?

#1 - iPod or Mp3?
I love the iHeartRadio app on my phone. My love of music is pretty broad. My playlist ranges from Taylor Swift and Evanescence to Ed Sheeran, Top 40 songs, and rock songs from the 80s and 90s.

#2 – Chocolate or Vanilla?
Chocolate. There is no competition. And if there’s caramel with sea salt – Watch out!

#3 – Mashed Potatoes or French Fries?
Fries with burgers. Mashed Potatoes with every other meat.

#4 – Comedy or Drama?
Comedy if my kids are around. Drama if I’m by myself.

#5 – Danielle Steel or Nicholas Sparks?
Nicholas Sparks makes me cry – always. So I have to go with Danielle Steel.

#6 – Fantasy or Reality?
Can I go with realistic fantasy? Something along the lines of GAME OF THRONES. It feels realistic, but then there are some fantastical events that cross the line of reality.

#7 – Call or Text?
Text if I’m not in a hurry. Call if I’m under a time crunch or just want to hear someone’s voice.

#8 – Public School or Home School?
I taught in the public school for 10 years, and my girls go to public school now. So I have to go with Public.

#9 – Coffee or Hot Chocolate?
Love hot chocolate, but it has too many calories. Coffee with creamer and a little Kahlua is almost as good.

#10 – eBook or Paperback?
eBook. Just can’t beat the convenience.

She is however, supposed to be the daughter of the wealthiest, most influential man in the post-apocalyptic city of New Phoenix.

But apparently, she isn't.

As Alex struggles to cope with her new life in Elder Grey, an act of friendship ends in tragedy. When someone she thought was an enemy pulls her from her despair, Alex discovers that old friends cannot be trusted, prejudice is another word for fear, and trust, not blood ties, make a family.

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?
I’d love it to be but it’s still early stages for me, so at the moment, no. But hopefully sometime in the near future I might be able to answer that question with a “yes”!

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?
Editing!

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?
When I was writing Into Darkness, I had a mentor – Sonny Whitelaw. She is a published author and she helped me hugely with my first novel.

#4 – What is next for your writing?
I’m currently writing something totally different – it is still a young adult book, but it is historical fiction. I’m almost through editing on that, and once it’s done I’ll write the final installment in the Darkness series.

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?
Love to read! I’ve just started Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. I loved Cinder, so here’s hoping this one is just as good.

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career? Yes, someday I expect to do nothing but write all day long. However, even if it ends up being nothing more than a hobby, I will still do it. The voices inside of my head would never let me sleep if I didn’t.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process? For me the hardest part is finding time. I am a high school English teacher, and finding time to write can be challenging. Once I find the time, my fingers leave fire in their wake as they prance across the keyboard of my MacBook Air.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family? No, I did not have any connections to the publishing world. I ventured out on my own and took a risk. So glad that I did.

#4 – What is next for your writing? I am starting a new book that will stand alone. So far I have three series. It is a book about organized crime, much like Easter’s Lilly and Linked, but it will have a life of its own.

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading? I LOVE to read. Maya Banks and her KGI series swept me away for quite a while. I am currently looking for a new read as a matter of fact. If you have any ideas, I am open to suggestions.
