Tour Kick Off - Meet and Greet - The Disappearing Girl by Heather Topham Wood

New Adult Contemporary
Date Published: 5/7/2013

Kayla Marlowe is slowly vanishing…

Last year, Kayla’s world imploded. Her beloved father died, leaving her alone with a narcissistic mother who is quick to criticize her daughter’s appearance. During her winter break from college, Kayla’s dangerous obsession with losing weight begins.

Kayla feels like her world changes for the better overnight. Being skinny seems to be the key to the happiness she has desperately been seeking. Her mother and friends shower her with compliments, telling her how fantastic she looks. Kayla is starving, but no one knows it.

Cameron Bennett explodes into Kayla’s life. He’s sexy and kind—he has every quality she has been looking for in a guy. As Cameron grows closer to Kayla and learns of how far she’s willing to go to stay thin, he becomes desperate to save her.

Kayla’s struggles with anorexia and bulimia reach a breaking point and she is forced to confront her body image issues in order to survive. She wonders if Cameron could be the one to help heal her from the pain of her past.

New Adult Contemporary-Ages 17+ due to language and sexual situations.

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?
Yes, absolutely! I consider myself lucky because I also work as a freelance writer. In between writing novels, I take on freelance projects to supplement my income. My books have sold well and I’m very grateful for that, but I think I’d still continue to write fiction even if I didn’t sell a single copy. It’s fun to build pretend worlds with pretend people in them.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?

I hate to hit the delete button on any of my manuscripts. I find it difficult to cut scenes that I’ve worked tremendously hard on. It’s a necessary evil though and trimming some of the fat from a book can actually improve it overall.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?

I could probably give an Academy Award speech on how many people helped with my writing. I’ve worked with a fabulous team of editors, proofreaders and formatters to get my book ready for publication. For my first novel, I tried to do everything myself, but I’ve found to leave some things to the professionals.

#4 – What is next for your writing?

I’m working on the final book for my paranormal romance Second Sight series. The books feature a quirky psychic named Kate Edwards and a handsome detective named Jared. I also have another standalone New Adult romance novel in the works.

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?

I run a book blog too, so I definitely have an addiction to reading. I just finished Damaged by H.M. Ward and I’m starting The Program by Suzanne Young.

  3. I read my cousin-in-law's novel, which incorporated details of her own experience as an adolescent struggling with an eating disorder, also as a grief reaction to a devastating emotional loss. I imagine your book will be just as gut-wrenching, and just as worth the mental effort on the part of the reader. Good luck with everything!! And THANK YOU for the gievaway!!!
