Sixteen year old Emma Cartwright runs away from her family’s South Carolina rice plantation after a slave is beaten to death. Determined to join the fight against slavery, Emma enlists in the Union Army disguised as a young man. Nothing could prepare her for the sacrifices needed—and for falling in love for the first time.
#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?
Absolutely! I think for most writers, storytelling is a heart-felt passion, whether or not there’s a lot of money involved. Creating characters, setting, plot twists…seeing it all come together, it's a great high, and when others share your enthusiasm, it’s a unique bond.
#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?
Putting away the research is always the hardest part for me. There’s always more to learn, more to explore, more awesome detail-nuggets to find, but at some point, you have to buckle down and write—and incorporate those meaningful details.
#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?
A really good friend of mine is a got-to for me when the book is done. She’s pretty much always my first reader, and I take her impressions and feedback to heart. Since she isn’t a writer, I know her comments might be something that other readers notice, and that info is like gold!
#4 – What is next for your writing?
More writing, of course. That idea well never runs dry. I have two short stories I’m working on and my first ‘modern historical’ (set during the 70s / 90s). Focus and finishing those are the immediate goals.
#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?
Yes! I love reading, but this is an area where I often sacrifice; this is where I find my writing time. If I didn’t write, I’d be a full-time reader! I’m currently reading The Shroud Key by Vincent Zandri. I’m his new #1 fan girl right now.
