Tour Kick Off: The Proving by @kenbrosky

YA Sci-Fi
Date Published1/5/2016

It's been 133 years since the Specters invaded Earth. Like ghosts they haunt the planet, devouring anyone foolish enough to venture outside the last remaining protected cities. For some, venturing out isn't a choice--it's a necessary evil to prove yourself to your clan as you come of age.
But when a team of ambitious youth—New Adults—undertakes a mission deep in Specter territory, they discover a terrible secret. Everything they've learned may be wrong ... and Earth is in grave danger.

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?

Yes! I mean, I “see” it as a career, but I don’t make oodles of money. So maybe it’s one of those careers where you have to get something else out of it besides money. Oh! Fan mail is good. Fan mail feels like money. Wait: what if authors created a new currency of fan mail that they could use in bookstores? That would be so awesome.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?

Definitely the second draft. Oh, sweet baby Jesus how I hate the second draft. But I also kind of love it, so we have this really frightening relationship. The second draft is where I try to insert all of the stuff I thought about AFTER I finished the first draft. Usually, these are details and character arcs that need to exist, but I don’t know where. It kinda drives me nuts. But when I finish a particular chapter, it feels so much better. It’s like doing laundry: it’s a chore, but then you smell good for another week.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?

My partner, Dagny, has always been my personal editor. She goes through and takes out all the awful stuff and helps me hone my skills. No, I mean skillz. There we go.

#4 – What is next for your writing?

I’m going to finish out this series, and then I’m going to maybe do a fantasy series or a mystery series. I feel like both would be really, really fun. I’m already writing one and enjoying myself immensely.

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading A Gathering of Shadows. I’m also reading a non-fiction book titled Dynasty. I’ve been re-reading Generation X comics because I find them incredibly fun!
